Propel Students Toward Success with Less Financial Stress and Less Debt

4/18/2023

Heading to college with only partial scholarships and financial aid packages sets students up for ScholarshipWreck… lots of debt upon receiving a degree, or dropping out with debt.
“ A lot of people think if you give a kid a scholarship, now the kid’s set…
they’ve got everything they need. Nothing could be further
from the truth.”

Chris Metzler, director of student services at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology
Most Scholarship & Financial Aid Recipients Do Not Receive Full Ride Scholarships; usually, full or partial tuition, and sometimes partial room & board.
Picture
Together, through all who pitch in, we make a difference for others: 1 laptop; and 1 Supplemental Scholarship award each semester, for $100 textbooks, commuting, travel, meals, tuition gaps, dorm & school supplies, expenses their wealthier peers’ families can afford.
*$6,000 can cover a semester tuition gap; numerous students each semester have smaller & larger gaps.
$18,000 will cover laptops for 2023 grads; $450 = 1 refurbished laptop.
$1,000 will cover 1 Supplemental Scholarship AMEX card for 1 semester (students submit expense tracking reports); $5,000 buys 5 cards for DCI grads from 2021, 2022, 2023; goal, $120,000 equals Supplemental Scholarship awards for both semesters.
Every semester our select group of college scholarship students will face college and living expenses they and their families can’t afford. Through your support, our 2023 Celebration of Achievements fundraising campaign allows us to purchase laptops and provide fall & spring semester Supplemental Scholarship awards.
Our fundraising goal is to provide more laptops, larger awards for supplemental expenses, as well as tuition gaps when needed.

* Tuition Gaps have Serious Consequences for Students
Student award recipients are grateful for the supplemental scholarship awards.
Via our survey and in conversations we learn also how partial tuition scholarship recipients are struggling. For example, a freshman, full-time at a local university, responds to our survey:
Are your room and board costs fully covered by scholarships and other financial aid? "I am living at home to avoid all those fees."
If you’re working, how many hours/week? "I work from 25-30 hours a week. Usually on weekends I have to stay longer because something always happens, especially on Sundays."
Would funds for tuition...be helpful? " It would help me save more money. If there was a way that I could cover my tuition entirely and could lessen the days that I work, I'd be much happier and less tired. I would have more time for studies and for more of a social life."

Good News is Also Good for Us- Here’s Where to Find It
We can all use some good news too with the overwhelming amount of bad news we’re fed daily; the good news is out there somewhere, and you’ll find sources beyond All Out for Change® news of how we help partial scholarship students with limited financial resources start college with a laptop in hand, and get through college with less debt.

"Just as reading bad news stirs up hormones and sparks neurotransmitters that change mood, so does good news. We can benefit greatly in our personal lives and relationships from exposing ourselves to positive information."

"Learning how little of the whole is covered by scholarships by engaging with students, learning from our conversations and emails, reading news articles and books, gives me more reason to stand behind our amazing select group of college scholarship recipients to help them avoid ScholarShipWreck.” MaryAnn Puglisi, Chief Engagement Officer & Founder of All Out for Change®.

Campus Food Insecurity Is a Serious Problem for Financial Aid Scholarship Recipients

11/17/2022

Picture
To understand our student scholarship recipients’ realities watch a short revealing, eye-opening presentation from our Celebration of Achievements event. Andy Sonn, Faculty Advisor for The Store (GW University student run food pantry), speaks about campus food insecurity and other challenges students with limited financial resources face.
And listen to a recent NPR Takeaway about hunger on college campuses
"Numerous reports over the years show that food insecurity among college students is as widespread as ever. According to the latest data from The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice, in the fall of 2020, nearly three in five students lacked adequate access to “basic needs” like food or housing. And across both two-and-four year colleges, 1 in 3 students experienced food insecurity.” The Takeaway, October 26, 2022
Imagine Living in a Dorm Room, No Meal Plan
Most of our 33 students don’t have full ride scholarships, and so don’t have room and board covered, and deal with getting along somehow without. Their spring semester Supplemental Scholarship awards will be funded through Giving Tuesday and our year end campaigns. Student Fall semester expense tracking reports reveal: fast food meals at healthier chains as a way to pick up affordable, nutritious, generous amounts of food with their AMEX gift cards. Additionally, we see charges for: public transportation, ride share, electric scooters to and from school; textbooks; dorm and school supplies.
Their Conundrum In His Words
I just emailed an award recipient, "Do you have a full scholarship that covers tuition, room and board? Are you on a meal plan?” What a conundrum many students face en route to degrees and careers:

"...At the moment, I've been using the AMEX Gift Card for mostly academic books and school supplies. Recently, I have some scholarships for this semester, including "George Mason Honor College Scholarship" and "DC TAG". However, I noticed it doesn't cover the entire student tuition.

Yes- I'm currently using a meal plan, however, I'm still paying more than $1,000. It's not a full-cover scholarship. Therefore, I'm wondering if there's more scholarships that I can register for, so I can be all set for next semester? At this point, I'm mostly relying on scholarships and grants, since my family is low income, and therefore I have to find other ways to pay my tuition….”   DCI grad 2022, studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at George Mason University

Anthony Keeps Soaring Higher - Toward Grad School

3/31/2022

Eight years ago, when Anthony asked his teacher at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in DC to be his mentor, Michael Crabill reflected as he accepted the honor, “here’s a young man who has a very special talent.”
Picture
Little did Anthony’s mentor/coach/accompanist know that 8 years later, he would hear the head of the vocal department at Juilliard comment that he sees,  “Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorotti potential”.  See and hear what Michael foresaw back then. With 4 All Out for Change® Supplemental Scholarship awards since 2017, Anthony’s achievements and good fortune have multiplied, including a full scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory, a Today Show interview, and news coverage. As he once remarked, “it takes a village!”

Several months after Cantate selected Anthony as their inaugural Young Artist of Color, he emailed us, "...I need to share some amazing news ... the Des Moines Metro Opera company offered me a position in their Young Artist Apprenticeship program this summer. Des Moines is a renowned and highly revered company in the opera world and I cannot contest that this is an amazing opportunity..."
