When Ambition Meets Good Fortune - Dreams Emerge & Their Achievement
So much potential and outstanding achievement surfaces when the financial resources and people appear to cultivate that potential that lies dormant in economically disadvantaged students and their schools.
Your contribution fulfills dreams, gives economic mobility by opening doors to college, meaningful careers with fruitful salaries and economic independence.
James
In Fall 2020, as a high school senior in a DC public school, James received the George Mason University acceptance letter and scholarship he’d dreamed of since 9th grade. With a partial scholarship, he may be faced with more debt than Rebecca’s $40k. But he’ll live at home in DC and commute, which should be a big help. ”High School and getting into college has taken so much...,” remarks James. Anthony replies, “You seem pretty adept.” Listen to the concerns of a 17 year old contemplate finances, about to take a big step in changing his life as he starts his studies in film. “To come out of debt with $50,000 would be a Godsend!"
Braswell
Senior year in high school, Braswell climbed into a cargo van packed with students to visit colleges in NC and FL. He told me, “I learned there’s more than just Alabama Avenue." He came upon a program and people that gave him the courage and desire to cross the country for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. And he’s running a University program now that helps others from underserved communities see the possibilities and make it happen.
Fabricio
His is a really remarkable story; 30 minutes doesn’t capture it all. But it conveys the good fortune of pivotal people at the right time, and his determination that launched Fabricio from a poor, struggling El Salvadoran immigrant family of 4 sharing a studio apartment- now an IT guru, who purchased a home for himself, his sister and parents, achieving not only upward mobility, but also his vow to assure his parents a nice home. “I constantly feel guilty for being 1 of the ones who made it out… why me?"
Rebecca
With a Presidential Scholarship that included tuition, room and board, and a Merit Scholarship and Federal loans, Rebecca just finished her last year at GW, and left Washington for an IT career in Seattle. When asked by Anthony, “Why higher education for you?” Rebecca replies, “It’s the only way out”.
Zoee
About her senior year in high school Zoee says, “All I’d do after school is write essays. I had to apply for a lot of scholarships”. While excelling throughout high school, she also worked and received a full tuition scholarship to Marquette University. To "save a lot of money” sophomore year, Zoee eliminated her room & board expenses as a Resident Assistant for her dorm. Every year she applies for scholarships to help cover housing, food, school supplies, and living expenses.
