Propel Students Toward Success with Less Financial Stress and Less Debt

4/18/2023

Heading to college with only partial scholarships and financial aid packages sets students up for ScholarshipWreck… lots of debt upon receiving a degree, or dropping out with debt.
“ A lot of people think if you give a kid a scholarship, now the kid’s set…
they’ve got everything they need. Nothing could be further
from the truth.”

Chris Metzler, director of student services at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology
Most Scholarship & Financial Aid Recipients Do Not Receive Full Ride Scholarships; usually, full or partial tuition, and sometimes partial room & board.

Together, through all who pitch in, we make a difference for others: 1 laptop; and 1 Supplemental Scholarship award each semester, for $100 textbooks, commuting, travel, meals, tuition gaps, dorm & school supplies, expenses their wealthier peers’ families can afford.
*$6,000 can cover a semester tuition gap; numerous students each semester have smaller & larger gaps.
$18,000 will cover laptops for 2023 grads; $450 = 1 refurbished laptop.
$1,000 will cover 1 Supplemental Scholarship AMEX card for 1 semester (students submit expense tracking reports); $5,000 buys 5 cards for DCI grads from 2021, 2022, 2023; goal, $120,000 equals Supplemental Scholarship awards for both semesters.
Every semester our select group of college scholarship students will face college and living expenses they and their families can’t afford. Through your support, our 2023 Celebration of Achievements fundraising campaign allows us to purchase laptops and provide fall & spring semester Supplemental Scholarship awards.
Our fundraising goal is to provide more laptops, larger awards for supplemental expenses, as well as tuition gaps when needed.

* Tuition Gaps have Serious Consequences for Students
Student award recipients are grateful for the supplemental scholarship awards.
Via our survey and in conversations we learn also how partial tuition scholarship recipients are struggling. For example, a freshman, full-time at a local university, responds to our survey:
Are your room and board costs fully covered by scholarships and other financial aid? "I am living at home to avoid all those fees."
If you’re working, how many hours/week? "I work from 25-30 hours a week. Usually on weekends I have to stay longer because something always happens, especially on Sundays."
Would funds for tuition...be helpful? " It would help me save more money. If there was a way that I could cover my tuition entirely and could lessen the days that I work, I'd be much happier and less tired. I would have more time for studies and for more of a social life."
